Spain's digital nomad visa (officially the visado de teletrabajador de carácter internacional) carries one of the stricter insurance requirements among popular nomad destinations — and it's a genuinely different bar than most travel-medical-style nomad insurance is built to clear.
What Spain's digital nomad visa requires
- Insurer must be authorized to operate in Spain. Multiple current sources indicate Spain requires a policy from an insurer registered with Spain's insurance regulator (DGSFP), not simply any international provider.
- Coverage equivalent to Spain's public healthcare system. The policy needs to match the scope of Spain's national health system, not just provide a general emergency coverage limit.
- No co-payments, deductibles, or waiting periods. Several sources describe this as a common reason applications are rejected — "copago" (co-pay) plans are routinely turned down.
This is a materially different requirement than most nomad insurance
What this means practically
If you're planning to apply for Spain's digital nomad visa, plan on maintaining two things: a Spain-compliant local policy for the visa application itself, and (if you want it) broader international coverage for travel outside Spain, since domestic Spanish policies may not travel with you the way an international nomad plan does. Some digital nomads maintain both simultaneously during the visa period for this reason.
